Did not he who made the outside make the inside also? 41 But give as alms those things that are within, and behold, everything is clean for you. 42 \u201cBut woe to you Pharisees! For you tithe mint and rue and every herb, and neglect justice and the love of God. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others. 43 Woe to you Pharisees! For you love the best seat in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces. 44 Woe to you! For you are like unmarked graves, and people walk over them without knowing it.\u201d &nbsp;(ESV)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left has-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Discussion Question<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>In verses 37 to 54, Jesus condemns two classes of religious leaders.&nbsp; He points out specific practices that have hindered belief in him.&nbsp; We\u2019d like to look at this section over two weeks dealing with each class separately.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Why did these four specific practices of the Pharisees hinder belief in Jesus?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left has-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Discussion Summary<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Reminders to read these \u201cwoes\u201d in conjunction with:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Acknowledgment that the leaders had a legitimate role.&nbsp; Matthew 23:2<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Some of the religious leaders were sincere.&nbsp; John 3<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>These leaders were not living up to their professions of holiness.&nbsp; Isaiah 29:12<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Jesus pronounced \u201cwoes\u201d or judgments against the leaders.&nbsp; He was identifying specific problems (selfishness, pride, hypocrisy, ambition) that hindered belief in him.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Verses 39-41:&nbsp; The focus on outward rituals makes one blind to the need for inward spirituality.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Verse 42:\u00a0 Tithes were to be collected for those who did not have \u201cjobs\u201d \u2013 the religious leaders. \u00a0Insisting on taking from the poor to give to those who were not as poor defeats the purpose.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Verse 43:&nbsp; To those in positions of authority, there is always a danger of developing pride.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Verse 44:&nbsp; Those in positions of authority are accountable if they lead people astray by focusing on the wrong things.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Jesus still gave constructive ways for the religious leaders to self-correct:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>One way to translate verse 41 is \u201ccleanse what is within, then nothing will be unclean.\u201d&nbsp; (Moffat Translation)&nbsp; In other words, fix your motivation for your actions.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Another way to translate verse 41 is \u201cgive away rather its contents as alms, and all will be clean for you.\u201d (Anchor Yale Bible Translation)&nbsp;
